I remember watching Mamma Mia! when it was first staged here in 2012. The music was beautiful (I am a huge ABBA fan) but I couldn’t see much because I was seated in what is fondly called the nosebleed section. Oh, how I wished I was closer so I could see the colorful costumes and the grand set. Luckily, a film adaptation was already out by then so I could fully appreciate the musical.
Now, I can relive the magic of the stage version because Mamma Mia! is returning to Manila on September 29 as part of their international tour!
Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical featuring the music of Swedish band ABBA, and follows the story of Sophie, a young girl who goes on a quest to discover the identity of her father in time for her wedding. This adventure brings three men from her mother Donna’s romantic past back to the Greek island paradise she and her mother call home.
The musical features the top ABBA hits “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and of course, “Mamma Mia.”
Since the musical’s premiere in 1999, the show has been seen by more than 60 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages. It is one of the longest-running shows on both Broadway and the West End.
In 2008, it was adapted into a film, starring Meryl Streep as Donna Sheridan. At the time of its release, it was the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time. A sequel focusing on the life of Donna called Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is currently in production and will be released worldwide this July.
