Vivo Unveils World’s First In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Smartphone at CES 2018

Vivo took the spotlight at the recently-held Consumer Technology Association™ (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas, when the young smartphone brand unveiled the world’s first ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone. Through the technology, which was developed with its global partner Synaptics, users can unlock their smartphone through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display.

CES is a gathering of global brands and companies with consumer technologies, and has become a stage for innovators and breakthrough technologies for the past 50 years.

Vivo’s new technology comes at the perfect time, as studies from UBI Research revealed that bezel-less displays will grow in market share from 20% in 2017 to over 50% by 2020. In the second quarter of 2017 alone, 22 million full-screen smartphones were shipped worldwide. While fingerprint recognition is not a new offering, this is the first time that a smartphone could be unlocked by simply tapping the screen.

The in-display scanning technology is not limited to unlocking smartphones. It can also be used in any scenario that requires fingerprint recognition, such as when the screen is off, during software unlocking, or even mobile payment authentication. It’s designed not to disrupt the overall visual experience and remains invisible when not in use. And come on, it looks way sleeker.

The technology was first showcased through a prototype at the Mobile World Congress last year. Since then, Vivo has tirelessly worked to make it a seamless experience for consumers when it unveils.

This is not the first time Vivo has made innovations in the mobile industry. Some of their flagship products are the Vivo V7 and V7, which were two of the first smartphones to have a 24 megapixel front-facing camera; the Vivo X1, the first smartphone to have a dedicated Hi-Fi quality audio chip; and the Vivo V5 Plus, the first smartphone to have a 20 megapixel dual front camera.

No word has been revealed about which Vivo smartphone will utilize this technology, but it will be announced in early 2018.
