The denim jacket was invented in the 1880s by Levi Strauss, the same guy who invented blue jeans. Like jeans, the denim jacket was made to be durable in order to survive harsh conditions, perfect for cowboys, railroad engineers, and miners. Similar to jeans, the denim became one of the most classic pieces in menswear, worn by stylish men (and women) like James Dean, John Lennon, Veruschka, and Bruce Springsteen.
The denim jacket is still a staple in many stylish men’s wardrobes, and the more adventurous ones are choosing to add their own twist. Manila’s most stylish got the chance to personalize their denim jackets (and jeans) at Penshoppe’s Denim DIY Bar.
The pop-up event was divided into four stations: distressing, hand-painting, silkscreening, and patching. Penshoppe invited top artists Archie Geotina, Mara Reyes, and KITA to give it that artistic feel. There were tons of silkscreen prints, studs, patches, pins, and paint splatters to make one item truly yours.
I was tempted to go all out with the different designs, but I had to constantly remind myself that I’m an aspiring minimalist. To stay true to my ~*aesthetic*~ while dipping my toe in the maximalist pool of the Bar, I chose two cute unicorn patches. I thought it was still understated.
The Denim DIY Bar coincided with Penshoppe’s new silhouettes for their Denimlab line. Guys could choose from skinny to super skinny, carrot cut, and slim cut, while girls could opt for vintage slim, skinny, and super skinny. There’s also the Re-Tooled collection featuring cut and sew jeans. The line comes in different colors, finishes, and textures, allowing people to express their personal style.
They’ll feel comfortable, too. The Coolmax All Season Technology for men and the Coolmax Core Technology for women were designed to provide comfort in any weather condition or activity.
I hung out with my friends Hershey and Vinz after the event, where we took pictures of our denims. Theirs were so beautiful!
