I recently signed up for the gym and on my first day, my coach asked me what my diet is like. His eyes grew wide as I described my love for sweets, and he promptly asked me to control my intake so I can meet my fitness goals. I promised him I would, but I flat out told him that there’s one thing I can’t give up: Starbucks. The store has become my third place, where I can work, read, or hang out while having a Frappuccino or a cup of Teavana. There’s always a new drink so I can’t be expected to say no when it comes out!
My first bout of temptation came during my first week when Starbucks launched its new Okinawa Brown Sugar Latté and brought back the Salted Caramel Mocha Crumble. I hope my coach isn’t reading this but I went straight to the nearest store to try them!
The Okinawa Brown Sugar Latté uses one of Japan’s most popular ingredients, the Okinawa brown sugar, for a light drink mixed with caramel. You can have it hot but I enjoyed it iced, as we’re experiencing an early summer during the afternoons.
I’ve been a fan of the Salted Caramel Mocha Crumble when it first came out so I was glad that Starbucks brought it back. The drink is a combination of chocolate and espresso, and draped with toffee nut syrup, whipped cream, and caramel sauce. Topping the drink is a blend of turbinado sugar and sea salt for a complex flavor.
While waiting for my drink, I noticed Starbucks’ new line of Bearista dolls. The new collection celebrates the brand’s 20th anniversary in the Philippines by letting the new Bearistas wear the Starbucks apron with the 20th anniversary logo of Starbucks Philippines and a Philippine flag inspired Frappuccino pin.
Starbucks is also celebrating the Lunar New Year early with merchandise featuring the Chinese zodiac Earth Dog. There are specially-designed tumblers, mugs, and a Starbucks card. I’m not sure if I’ll be lucky this year, but I’ve been closely following my horoscope to see how I can make the most of 2018. It’s officially Aquarius season (my sign)!
I went to the gym this morning and I happily reported that I haven’t had any sweets lately… except one or two drinks from Starbucks. No regrets, guys.
